Today we got to meet summer staff alumni Gale & Ray Hinton. Gale and Ray both worked at Camp Wesley Woods in the summer of 1962. They met on July 1st, when Gale’s group of middle school girls sat down for a meal with Ray’s table of boys. Gale was 19 and Ray was 25. Gale looked young for her age, and when she sat down, Ray looked at her and asked, “Where’s your counselor?” They teased each other during that meal, but hit it off immediately. They dated all summer, but they lost touch that fall.
Forty years later, on March 5, 2002, Gale and Ray met again. They were married later that year, and now they return to Camp Wesley Woods once a year to reminisce. “This is our place. It’s so special to us,” they told us. Not only is today the anniversary of their reconnection, but it’s also Ray’s birthday! It’s been 52 years since they first met, and we’re honored that Camp Wesley Woods is still as special to Gale and Ray today as it was in 1962.
