Working as a Counselor this summer surpassed my expectations by a million miles. I am so thankful and blessed that God led me to Wesley Woods. Looking back, it is a little bizarre to consider that I applied, interviewed, was hired, and began to plan my flight arrangements when I had never even been to Tennessee before, let alone Townsend or Camp Wesley Woods! I knew not one single person that I would be working with, but something just felt right.
During my first two weeks, during staff training, a sense of community and sincere compassion developed among the staff that I have never before experienced so quickly in any group I have been a part of. I found that the environment created at CWW is one of trust, comfort, and support, whether you are a staff member, parent, or camper.
This summer I fell in love with the mountains, with camp, with seeing God’s love displayed so vibrantly among every person I encountered. Seeing so many children fired up for Christ each week was simply remarkable. Every single week I was placed with a new group of campers, and each had their own unique needs and challenges that created lasting memories. I loved that watching my campers and co-workers grow closer to the Lord (and to each other!) was part of my job! Each week I would emphasize with my campers the need to always remember the love God had showed them throughout their time at camp, and the love that we were able to share freely with one another. The children and youth I worked with inspired me to maintain an enthusiastic attitude throughout the summer, and I was able to learn so much from engaging with them.
I am unsure whether I will be able to return to camp in the future, but I will forever cherish my time spent at CWW and I pray that no matter where else God leads me I will never neglect to stop and smell the rhododendrons.
